TMP "AS TOLD TO..." TSS

"It's always easy to write up a song when it comes along by itself or you haven't heard anything from the artist in awhile. But choosing a song to highlight from a mixtape can be quite the conundrum, especially when there are several standout tracks. That's where I found myself when time came to highlight The Paxtons' Manhattan Project. One particular car trip found I was settled on "What We Doin' (Ballin)," but then on the ride back home, "Livin A Movie" stayed on repeat. The next day, I found myself relating heavily to "Money Right."So to shine a bit of extra light on one of the best full lengths of the recent year, we decided to reach out to Chris and Dave to get more insight on their creative process in making my personal faves from the project..."

TMHPU INTERVIEWS THE PAXTONS
Last year, I was at a Philadelphia train stop and decided to give this album a chance. From the moment I heard “Villification” off The Paxtons 2009 release “Work”, I was a fan of the Chicago born duo. Chris and Dave have been rapping since their days at Kenwood Academy located in Southside of Chicago neighborhood, Hyde Park. Since 2008, they have been living their dream. Their most recent piece of work is titled “The Manhattan Project” which has a double meaning for them. They recently moved from Washington D.C. to New York but they are also college graduates and scholars in their own right. The Manhattan Project was also the code name for the first atomic bomb project the United States was working on during World War II. Ironically, one of the major labs for the project was at the University of Chicago. Never neglecting their hometown, The Paxtons continue to make good music and represent the City of Wind. Recently, TMHPU interviewed the duo about their history as a group and their future in music...

CHURCH ON THE MOVE

Gotta give props when they're due... this past tuesday, Gangsta L. Crisis aka GLC dropped, in our humble opinion, the most important rap album to Chicago since 1997's Adrenaline Rush by Twista. Here's one of the standouts...

Content and their interplay puts them above a lot of those competing for the same things in this new music biz. When I started listening to this record I kept feeling as though it lacked something, as I played it through time and time again I picked up new tidbits on every track. A bar here, an sample flip there, the dynamic of them coming in off each other and carrying the baton like champions do. The music here isn’t your cookie cutter, mass manufactured tunes - this is music made with a mission to elevate.Continue reading...

PLANET ILL REVIEWS TMP
The Manhattan Project was the codename for the series of experiments leading up to the development of the atomic bomb. Chicago group The Paxtons (rappers Chris and Dave)have also been incubating, working on their chance to blow. Their latest effort, The Manhattan Project is a credible leap forward in their experiment. While some parts are inert, others are combustible and pack quite the punch.Continue reading
Lyrically and delivery wise, the duo have a multitude of flows, appearing most comfortable at the higher end of the sped spectrum and they have tight punch lines are not dependent on the two line set-up structure that hamstrings many of the rappers from their generation. Vocally they are solid as well with voices that are assertive and don’t often get drowned out by their production, which is varied if uneven. Content-wise they address the social issues of their native Chicago while still enjoying the spoils of blunts and bitches as most young rappers are enamored with these days...
